Marine class details
Diesel Class (2 days)
This course will not turn you into a diesel mechanic, but it will give you the knowledge to diagnose the normal things (almost always fuel problem or overheating) that cause a diesel to fail, and know if you can fix it or if it is serious enough to call in a mechanic.
Boat Systems (1 day):
This course goes over the basic systems of a boat including the galley systems, mechanical systems, rigging, steering, and the plumbing system. We look at different kinds of pumps the boat uses for different applications. We have several boats available to look at for this course, so you can understand different approaches to solve different system challenges, as well as various system pieces disassembled to understand their workings.
Marine Electrical (2 days)
Batteries, wiring, charging, alternators, inverters, generators, and all the various parts. Also power management, different types of battery configurations , power monitors, amp hours, watts. At the end of the two days you have a good feel of how big your battery bank should be, how many amps your charger should be, how long your battery bank will give power and why.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What will I be able to do with ASA 106?
ASA 106 will provide you with knowledge and experience to manage any boats on coastal water in any weather, night and day.
Will I have a chance to sail and have hands-on experience?
Yes. Narragansett Sailing School philosophy is to provide as much hands-on experience as possible. This class is 100% hands-on because you will spend four full days on board.
What happens if the weather is bad?
This class includes sailing in bad weather conditions so you will probably sail even if the weather is not great. And in reality most students want to sail in harsh conditions for their ASA 106 because they want to gain experience. However, we may cancel the class if the sailing conditions are too bad. In that case we will reschedule or refund you.
What do I need to bring?
Wear comfortable weather appropriate sport shoes and clothes, including water proof gears if necessary. In New England, weather can change very quickly even in the summer. Be prepared, bring water or energy drinks, sunglasses and sunscreen. More details here.
